Why Colourisma?

I wanted something unique and unusual, something memorable and fun- originally I wanted the name to simply be “Colour”, but then came to think that the choices in the names for a URL would be very limited. I thought of perceptions of artists and what they try to emulate- charisma was a definite characteristic I think artists try to convey in their work. I may not be the first to coin the term- but I hope you’ll come to think of this site whenever you see Colourisma!

What’s with the “u”?

Yes, it’s true, I am an American, so why do I have this hybrid spelling? Well, I currently live in Oslo, Norway. I feel being adaptive to new surroundings is the best way to make friends. As it turns out, many places all over the world in fact hybridise their spelling as a mix of British and American. I decided to adapt this in order to fit in and be accommodating to my new home and neighbours (including the ones over that little pond near me now- Hi England!). I’m also learning Norwegian!  Change really doesn’t bother me, as they say, variety is the spice of life!

What is the goal of Colourisma?

My main goal is to help YOU! That’s right- you! I think everyone can draw and talent only pushes people to keep drawing- it doesn’t make them a better artist. Practice does! I hope that you will be inspired by the interviews and articles and I hope that the tutorials can teach you what you didn’t know about drawing. I want to nurture young beginning artists and help them realise their true potential. I had so much encouragement as a kid to keep drawing, so if I can encourage even a single person to keep drawing through my site, I consider it a mission accomplished.

About Me

Charlene Lee Reed is my full name, but I’m better known as Char. I’ve have been drawing my whole life, I just never stopped from the day my parents took the crayon out of my mouth and put it in my hand.

Technical info: I was born in Austin, Texas. Soon after my family relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, then to Greenville, North Carolina, onto Virginia Beach, Virginia, then Chesapeake, Virginia, then finally the Raleigh/ Durham area of North Carolina. Recently I have settled in Oslo, Norway. I am currently pursuing a career in freelance illustration and conceptual art.
